METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods of removing gum from concrete depends on the gum’s age and level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left not long ago and it hasn’t penetrated the surface, we are sometimes able to get it off by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping the gum off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a workable consistency compared to a warm and stringy glob. Once that happens, we slide a putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. After that we slide the scraper very slowly beneath the gum and the whole piece should then peel right off the concrete.

The above process is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove gum that has turned black, or is already smashed deep down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we do not use very high pressure because that might ruin the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses any more pressure than needed to clean concrete. These surfaces can be damaged a lot easier than people think, especially if they’re only 1-2 years old. Concrete can require up to 100 years to cure. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our chewing gum removal professional.
